Michelle Calkins

Synchronized Swimming Athlete — Inducted 1980

Michelle Calkins emerged as one of Canada’s leading synchronized swimmers during the 1970s, achieving exceptional success at both the national and international levels while helping establish Canada as a major force in the sport.

She first gained national recognition as a member of the Calgary Aquabelles team that won the Junior National Team title in 1971. The team successfully defended the championship in 1972, when Calkins also captured the Canadian Junior National Solo title. Advancing to senior competition, she earned international success in 1973 as a member of Canada’s silver medal–winning team at the inaugural World Aquatics Championships.

Between 1973 and 1978, Calkins won seven Canadian Senior National Championships in duet, team, and figures events. Internationally, she earned a silver medal at the 1975 Pan American Games and achieved major success in duet competition with partner Helen Vanderburg. Together they won gold at the Pan Pacific Championships and captured a historic gold medal at the 1978 World Aquatics Championships in Berlin — the first World Championship duet title won by Canadian synchronized swimmers.

After Induction

Following her competitive career, Calkins continued to contribute to synchronized swimming through coaching and athlete development. She began coaching with the Calgary Aquabelles, guiding athletes to numerous junior national titles and earning recognition as Junior Coach of the Year in 1984.

In 1988, she joined the Canadian National Team coaching staff and helped lead Canadian athletes to international success, including gold medals at the Loano Cup in Italy in 1992 and a silver medal at the 1994 World Championships in Rome. She served as a Canadian Olympic coach at the 1996 Olympic Games when Canada won the silver medal in the synchronized swimming team event.
