Dr. Bob Bratton

Dr. Bob Bratton is one of the true pioneers of volleyball in Alberta. For more than four decades, he played a leading role in building, organizing, and expanding the sport at the provincial and national levels. His vision and leadership helped turn volleyball in Alberta into one of the strongest programs in North America.
In the 1960s, volleyball in Alberta was still developing. Bob recognized the need for strong leadership, better organization, and more opportunities for athletes. He helped develop the Alberta Volleyball Association, the Alberta Volleyball Referees Association, and early men’s leagues in Calgary and across the province. He served in many leadership roles, including president, referee-in-chief, public relations chair, and treasurer.
Bob believed that developing the sport meant developing everyone involved — players, coaches, and officials. He organized coaching clinics, referee training programs, and player development camps throughout Alberta. He was involved in introducing the Masters Officials Program, which became a model for officials’ training across Canada. Many of the systems he introduced are still used today.
Understanding the importance of international experience, Bob arranged tours, exhibition matches, and coaching exchanges with top teams from around the world. In 1964–65, he helped organize and personally support a historic USA–Soviet tour in Alberta, bringing high-level volleyball to Canadian audiences. He also organized the first European tour by a Canadian university team, opening the door for many future international opportunities.
Bob was also a strong promoter of the sport. He published newsletters and wrote some volleyball books to support coaching education and raise funds for volleyball organizations. He helped host national championships in Alberta and played a key role in growing participation across the province. By the 1970s and 1980s, volleyball in Alberta had grown significantly due to his efforts.
Beyond volleyball, Bob was involved in other sports and helped with the planning and development of Lindsay Park (now MNP Community & Sport Centre) in Calgary. His leadership extended beyond the court and into the broader sport community.
Dr. Bratton’s many honours include induction into the Canadian Volleyball Hall of Fame (2003) and the Alberta Volleyball Hall of Fame (2005), Calgary Booster Club – Honored Athletic Leader(1993), along with numerous leadership and service awards.
Dr. Bob Bratton’s legacy is built on vision, leadership, and dedication. His lifelong commitment laid the foundation for volleyball’s growth in Alberta and across Canada. His induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame recognizes his extraordinary impact as a true pioneer and builder of the sport.
