Bernard “Bernie” Haley is one of Alberta’s most respected and accomplished ice hockey officials. For over 30 years, he dedicated his life to officiating, mentoring, and strengthening the game of hockey at the provincial, national, and international levels.
Born in Edmonton in 1938 and raised through the minor hockey system, Bernie first excelled as a player. He earned a hockey scholarship to the University of North Dakota, where he was part of the 1958–59 team that won the school’s first NCAA Championship. After completing his MBA at Michigan State, Bernie returned to Alberta (Red Deer) where he shifted his focus from playing to officiating — the role that would define his legacy.
Bernie quickly rose through the ranks as an elite official. Known for his outstanding skating ability, strength, and positioning, he officiated at all levels of amateur and professional hockey including the Innisfail women’s team. He worked in the World Hockey Association (WHA), with games involving the Alberta Oilers and Calgary Cowboys, and officiated Canadian junior, college, and senior championships.
Internationally, Bernie represented Canada with distinction. In 1972, he was selected as Canada’s only official at the IIHF World Hockey Championships in Prague. In 1980, he again was the sole Canadian official at the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid — the historic “Miracle on Ice” Olympics. In 1981, he officiated the IIHF World Championships in Sweden and was chosen to referee the gold medal game. These assignments reflect the trust and respect he earned worldwide.
At home in Alberta, Bernie never missed an assigned game and regularly drove long distances in inclement weather to support the teams and their fans. He officiated provincial and national championships for over two decades and achieved Level VI National High-Performance accreditation — the highest officiating level in Canada.
Beyond the ice, Bernie was deeply committed to developing officials and supporting his community. He managed referee assignments in Hockey Alberta’s Central Zone 4 for more than 20 years and instructed at clinics across the province. He volunteered his time to local organizations, often donating his officiating fees back to community groups. In 2018, the Innisfail Minor Hockey Association created the “Bernie Haley Award for Officiating” in his honour.
Bernie Haley’s legacy is built on integrity, excellence, humility, and service. His dedication to the game, his mentorship of young officials, and his representation of Canada on the world stage make him a true ambassador for Alberta hockey. His induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame recognizes a lifetime of leadership and outstanding contribution to the sport.
