Pat Bowlen

Football Builder- Special Legends Class of 2025

Pat Bowlen, born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, in 1944, was a highly influential figure in professional football as the long-time owner of the Denver Broncos.

Bowlen’s early athletic pursuits included playing junior football with the Edmonton Huskies in the Canadian Junior Football League from 1962 to 1964, winning three championships. A lifelong athlete, he also completed the New York City Marathon in just over three hours and finished the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii in 1983.

In the 1970s, Bowlen’s company, Batoni-Bowlen Enterprises, served as the general contractor for the Edmonton Coliseum. At age 40, he purchased majority ownership of the Denver Broncos, taking on an active role as the team’s hands-on owner and CEO. Under his leadership, the Broncos transformed from a struggling franchise into one of the NFL’s most successful organizations, earning 13 division titles, 7 AFC championships, and 3 Super Bowl victories (1998, 1999, and 2016). Remarkably, during Bowlen’s 35 seasons as owner, the Broncos had more Super Bowl appearances than losing seasons.

Bowlen’s influence extended far beyond Denver. He served on numerous NFL committees and was deeply involved in league decision-making. His dedication to the sport and impact on the game earned him induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019, cementing his legacy as one of the most transformative figures in NFL history.
