Dr. Randy Gregg

Hockey Athlete- Special Legends Class of 2025

Born in Edmonton, Randy Gregg is a five-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Edmonton Oilers, winning titles in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990, and is one of only three Alberta-born players to have played on all five championship teams. He concluded his NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks in 1992 and holds the second-highest regular season plus-minus among Alberta-born NHL players. Gregg represented Canada internationally, playing on the men’s Olympic hockey teams in 1980 and 1988 and winning the Canada Cup in 1984.

In addition to his hockey career, Gregg excelled in baseball, playing with the Edmonton Tigers senior team from 1975 to 1982 and earning Most Valuable Player honours in 1978 when the Tigers won the Canadian Senior Championship. He also played four seasons of university hockey for the University of Alberta Golden Bears, winning four Canada West titles and two CIAU national championships after joining the team as a walk-on. In 1979, after captaining the Golden Bears to their second consecutive national title, he received the Wilson Challenge Trophy as the University of Alberta’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete and the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Award as CIAU Hockey Player of the Year.

Following his athletic career, Gregg pursued medicine, opening a sports clinic in Edmonton, and founded FunTeam Alberta, a non-profit providing children with low-cost access to sports. He currently serves as Managing Director of the Edmonton Riverhawks, a West Coast League baseball team. His outstanding contributions to sport have been recognized through induction into the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame (1983), the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (1999), the Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame (2003), the Canada West Hall of Fame (2022), the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame (2022), and the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame (2024). U Sports annually presents the Dr. Randy Gregg Award to honour the player who best combines outstanding hockey ability, academic achievement, and community involvement.

Alongside his wife, Kathy—a two-time Canadian Olympic speed skater—Gregg takes pride in raising four children, Jamie, Ryan, Jessica, and Sarah, and cherishes time with their twelve energetic and active grandchildren.
