William “George” Hardy

Hockey Builder — Inducted 1989

William George Hardy was one of Alberta’s most influential builders of amateur hockey and a respected leader in Canadian sport administration. His dedication to developing organized hockey at the university, provincial, national, and international levels helped shape the growth of the game during the early and mid-twentieth century.

Hardy played a major role in helping construct the first ice rink on the University of Alberta campus, which officially opened on December 1, 1927. His commitment to student athletics and amateur sport strengthened hockey development within the university system and provided opportunities for generations of athletes.

He became actively involved as an executive member of both the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association (AAHA) and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA), where he helped modernize competition structures across the country. Hardy assisted in establishing improved playoff systems for both the Allan Cup and the Memorial Cup, contributing to stronger national championships for senior and junior hockey.

Internationally respected for his leadership, Hardy served as President of the International Ice Hockey Association and later played an important role within the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), serving as its president from 1948 to 1951. His efforts strengthened international cooperation in amateur hockey during a critical period following the Second World War.

Beyond sport administration, Hardy was also recognized as a distinguished academic, historian, and novelist connected to the University of Alberta. His contributions to education, literature, and amateur sport earned him national recognition across multiple fields.

William George Hardy passed away on August 28, 1979.
