Bell Memorial - Inducted 1995
Ed Whalen was born and educated in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He entered medical school at the University of Saskatchewan but got sidetracked when he was offered a job in radio. He has been in broadcasting for forty-seven years. Ed Whalen has won various broadcast awards for his editorial work and for feature television shows. He was news and sports director for 2 & 7 Television in Calgary for 25 years. In 1979, he went independent and formed his own company. He continues to work in television, radio, and newspaper and is proud of his 40-year association with Calgary 7 Television. His broadcasting career includes both radio and television play-by-play and/or hosting in the Western Hockey League (when it was a pro league), World Hockey Association, Alberta Junior Hockey League, the Stampeders Football Team, and the NHL Calgary Flames. He is also known for his lengthy involvement with Stampede Wrestling, which he terms as the least important thing he has ever done; but it gained him the most notoriety. Ed Whalen takes the most pride, though; in a number of awards, he has received for his involvement in the community, particularly with regard to charity work.
Ed passed away on December 4, 2001
