John Cannon

John Cannon coached a variety of high school sports during his 35-year teaching career. Most notable was his coaching of high school boys and girls basketball and track and field. In thirty years of high school coaching, he gathered 28 City Championships and two Provincial titles.
John’s keen interest in track and field led him to form the Calgary Spartans Track Club in 1968 and the Calgary International Track Club in 1994. He has coached many provincial and national teams. His first national team coaching duties were for the 1978 Commonwealth Games. John has coached at four Commonwealth Games, three Pan American Games, two World Student Games, four World Championships, and four Olympic Games.
John has developed numerous city, provincial, and national level athletes including seven Olympians, among them, Honoured Member Jillian Richardson Briscoe. John has also been coaching athletes from African countries and has attended two World Indoor Championships and the African Games as head coach for the team from Chad.
John Cannon’s contribution to the sport of track and field for over 40 years has been at both the grassroots and elite levels in Alberta.
